Kakusei
A co-curated exhibition translating paintings into environments
Kakusei is a co-curated exhibition that brings paintings into dialogue with generative animation. The project considers the artwork not as a fixed image, but as a visual field capable of unfolding through time.
Starting from the pictorial language, atmosphere and internal tensions of each piece, custom digital environments were developed as individual interpretations rather than decorative effects. Using real-time processing and procedural animation, movement and transformation extend elements already present on the canvas, introducing duration without replacing the original work.
The Japanese term kakusei can be translated as awakening, consciousness or renewal. In the exhibition, this idea describes the transition between media and the viewer’s changing relation to the image. Painting remains the point of origin; the digital layer creates a second condition of encounter, where the work can be experienced as a slowly evolving presence.
